Kids ALIVE! Indonesia
PROJECT NAME: KIDS ALIVE INDONESIA (TANJONG BALAI)
LOCATION : BATU LIPAI, TANJONG BALAI KARIMUN, INDONESIA
PROJECT PARTNER: YAYASAN ANUGRAH BARU (local NGO)
PROJECT BRIEF: It began in 2014 with a weekly 2.5-hour ferry ride from Singapore to Karimun Island and a goal to provide better educational opportunities for the underprivileged children on the island. What started as a volunteer-led project has since evolved into a sustainable, community-run program.
In the early years, Singaporean volunteers traveled weekly to the island to lead classes, with local Indonesian partners serving as teacher assistants. The long-term plan was always to empower the local team; after years of training and mentorship, those assistants have now taken over as lead teachers. Today, the cycle continues as graduates from our Kids Alive program step into teaching or assistant roles to support the next generation.
Every Friday and Saturday, we now run six ImpACTS classes and one Hope for Kids session, with 7 to 13 students per class.
The curriculum is built on three pillars:
- Educational Play (Creation Time): Students use specially selected toys to develop cognitive intelligences.
- Interactive English (Learning Time): Lessons are student-centered, using games and activities to make language learning engaging.
- Character Building: Special activities for values learning, with teachers acting as role models and mentors, prioritizing values like respect, honesty and integrity.
What began as a cross-border initiative is now fully managed by our Indonesian partners, ensuring the project’s impact remains local and sustainable for the long term.
